Photophysical Characterization of Isoguanine in a Prebiotic-Like Environment
It is intriguing how a mixture of organic molecules
survived the prebiotic UV fluxes and evolved into the actual
genetic building blocks. Scientists are trying to shed light on
this issue by synthesizing nucleic acid monomers and their
analogues under prebiotic Era-like conditions and by exploring their excited state dynamics. To further add to this
important body of knowledge, this study discloses new
insights into the photophysical properties of protonated
isoguanine, an isomorph of guanine, using steady-state and
femtosecond broadband transient absorption spectroscopies, and quantum mechanical calculations. Protonated isoguanine
decays in ultrafast time scales following 292 nm excitation,
consistently with the barrierless paths connecting the bright
S1 (ππ*) state with different internal conversion funnels.
Complementary calculations for neutral isoguanine predict
similar photophysical properties. These results demonstrate
that protonated isoguanine can be considered photostable in
contrast to protonated guanine, which exhibits 40-fold longer
excited state lifetimesThe authors acknowledge funding from the National Science

Arrhythmogenicity quantification of two genetic defects affecting IKr channel in AF patients
[EN] Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia
characterized by disorganized electrical activations of the upper
chambers of the heart, leading to uncoordinated contraction and
compromising the pumping action of the organ. AF risk factors
include cardiovascular pathologies, endocrine disorders,
advanced age, obesity, smoking and heritability. Genetic
mutations affecting gene encoding for ion channel protein
structures are in fact considered as cause of fibrillatory events in
individuals who do not present any other co-morbidities.
In this work, two genetic mutations found in literature and
affecting the alpha-subunit of the rapid delayed rectifier
potassium channel are modelled, by reparametrizing the IKr
current formulation and by fitting it to mutant experimental data.
The modified potassium current was then incorporated into the
Courtemanche-Ramirez-Nattel (CRN) model and single cell
simulations have been performed to study the mutations¿ effects
on action potential and current traces, as well as, restitution
properties, in right and left atrium. Both mutations produced a
shortening of the action potential duration at 90% of
repolarization (APD90), a higher current peak and lower APD
values in the restitution curves. T895M yielded also to a reduction
in the maximum slope of restitution curve.
Tissue patch simulations revealed that T895M and T436M
provide a substrate to initiate and maintain re-entries during the
5 seconds of simulation. Rotor¿s meandering in T895M appears
more stable with a less extended area and more regular pattern
than in T436M. Investigation on 3D atria and torso models will
be necessary to provide further insights in understanding the
mechanisms behind these genetic mutations.I am grateful to the teams at GaTech, who helped me in the

Blockchain Architecture Based on Decentralised PoW Algorithm
Blockchain has gained increasing popularity across various industries due to its decentralized, stable, and secure nature. Consensus algorithms play a crucial role in maintaining the security and efficiency of Blockchain systems and selecting the right algorithm can lead to significant performance improvements. This article aims to provide a comparative review of the most used Blockchain consensus algorithms, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, we propose a dissociated architecture for an efficient Blockchain system that doesn't compromise on security. A comparison is made between this architecture and the reviewed algorithms, considering aspects such as algorithm performance, energy consumption, mining, decentralization level, and vulnerability to security threats. The research findings demonstrate that the proposed architecture can support complex algorithms with high security while addressing issues related to efficiency, processing performance, and energy consumption
Clinical Characteristics and Risk Factors For Mortality During the \u27First Wave\u27 of COVID-19 In Reynosa, Tamaulipas
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted public health in Mexico. As of February 2020, there have been at least four waves of contagion that resulted in 5.82 million positive cases and more than 325 thousand deaths. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, hospital and population-based information was available, frequently with non-specific symptoms. Little was known about the risk factors for mortality in specific conditions. We described the clinical characteristics of patients with COVID-19 in Reynosa, Tamaulipas during 2020 and identified the risk factors for mortality.
Methods: The COVID-19 cases registered from March to November 2020 in Reynosa were divided into survivors and non-survivors. The study had a retrospective cohort design. Data was obtained from the platform of the Respiratory Disease Surveillance System (SISVER), belonging to the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (SINAVE) of the Mexican Ministry of Health (https://sinave.gob.mx/). The variables considered were the age and gender of each patient. Twenty-five symptoms were included (fever, cough, headache, myalgia, arthralgia, among others); the outcome variable was the detection of COVID-19. Associated comorbidities were diabetes, obesity, hypertension, among others. The outcome variable was mortality. Data were analyzed using χ2 tests, Mann-Whitney tests, principal component analysis, and the Cox regression model.
Results:The highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths was observed in July, in men between 36-40 years old. The most frequent symptoms (37-51%) were headache, fever, cough, myalgia, and arthralgia. Clinical characteristics between survivors and non-survivors were significant (P
Conclusions: The most frequent symptoms in positive COVID-19 patients in Reynosa during 2020 were headache, fever, cough, myalgia, and arthralgia. Age, gender and diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, COPD, and CKD increase mortality. The factors with the highest risk of death were age over 80 years, admitted to the ICU or intubated
Intensive Habitat Loss in South Spain: Arborescent Scrubs with Ziziphus (5220*)
The habitat arborescent matorral with Ziziphus (5220*) was included in the Habitats Directive of the European Commission. These plant formations represent the maximum potential vegetation in a very restrictive arid environment, since it encompasses endemic, tropical, or Maghrebian floristic elements, and from other areas of the ancient Thetis Sea. In fact, the version of this community with Gymnosporia senegalensis (Lam.) Loes. [=Maytenus senegalensis (Lam.) Exell] constitutes extraordinarily singular flora formations in the Iberian southeast. These are unique communities in Europe and ecologically extremely valuable and, however, have been included among the Europe’s most endangered habitats. The vast economic development experienced in South Spain based on the remarkable transformation of traditional farming patterns into a highly profitable agriculture that uses industrial production methods and the groundwater intensively (agriculture intensification and land-use change), in addition to urbanization without sustainable land planning, determines that European G. senegalensis populations are seriously threatened by severe habitat destruction and fragmentation

Estrategias de conservación para Cotoneaster granatensis (Rosaceae), especie catalogada En Peligro de Extinción en la Comunitat Valenciana (España)
Cotoneaster granatensis (Rosaceae) is an endangered species in the Valencian Community with two natural populations known and 37 wild plants located in Alicante province. The strategy applied for conservation of this species comprises three steps in a cyclical method: in situ (first step) - ex situ - in situ (second step). Current conservation status for this species has been evaluated as a part of the first step in situ actions. Ex situ conservation activities consisted of germplasm conservation on seed banks, creation and maintenance of collections of livings plants and production of new plants in order to develop reintroductions (in situ actions: second step) in natural populations. The seed germination is a complex issue, but an effective protocol has been established reaching values over 60% of germination. The plant propagation by cuttings has not been successful. In situ actions such as reducing the threat of herbivory has been also essential to enhance natural populations. The initial results on plantations in the natural habitat show high survival rates of specimens

Fisheries and Prestige. Review and update of studies on the effects of the Prestige oil spill
The Prestige oil tanker sank in November 2002 and leaked around 60 000 mt. of heavy oil (type M-100) into the
sea. Immediately after the accident, closed areas were established. Among the fleets affected by the closures were
four of the most important in ICES Division VIIIc and Sub-division IXa North (bottom trawl, pair trawl, purse seine
targeting sardine and hand line targeting mackerel) as they exploit considerable resources, some outside
biological safety limits. A fall in effort was observed in all of them, mainly in the first quarter and in sub-divisions
VIIIc West and IXa North, although it failed to lead to a very large reduction in the total annual effort of each of the
fleets, with the exception of hand line. Pair trawlers can make two types of fishing trip, but differences in specific
composition among the three years analysed were not found in either of them. In the case of trawl, five kinds of
fishing trips were identified, and changes were only found in the type that targets Norway lobster, hake, megrim
and monk (HMMN), with a fall in the presence of Norway lobster
